This one is a quick past to help people differentiate between terms.  They’re often used interchangeably.  Some would argue it doesn’t matter either and that labels are meaningless.  Being a wordsmith however, I believe it does.  It promotes understanding and helps us figure ourselves out.

Psychic is what most people think of in regard to any mental talent or spiritual gift; telepathy, telekinesis, precognition, etc…  In reality, it’s a class of psionic / mental abilities that relate to perceiving things not otherwise known.  Precognition being the easiest example.  Postcognition (seeing into the past that you weren’t a part of), ESP and object reading all fall into this category.

Psionics are mental abilities that don’t involve sensing the unknown; Telepathy, Empathy and Telekinesis being good examples.  Any mental manipulation of spiritual energy belongs here also.

Sometimes, the lines do legitimately blur.  Some empaths, me included, have a finely honed danger sense.  It’s not so much ESP as it is picking up on negative  emotions around us.  An empath might have other abilities in the psychic category also, of course.  At least some psychic activity has a (slightly) simpler explanation though.

Magic or Magick is where the real difference lays.  The spelling with a ‘k’ is something that some magicians started to differentiate their studies from the art of stage illusionists.

I’m going to risk alienating a few present and future readers, BUT the truth is all schools of magic come down to the same thing; gathering spiritual energy using certain trappings to help focus the effort, shaping that energy mentally towards a specific desired outcome and then releasing that energy to do it’s thing.

One other difference is that you can call on other entities to help you.  Prayer, in a loose sense, is a form of magic IF you have faith God will answer your prayers.

Before anybody gets too excited, and falls into the “More Power, Tim!” trap…  Magick can very much be just as dangerous as mainstream religions warn.  Spiritual entities you may ask for help might not be what they say.  There’s an issue of karma also.  As Rumple liked to say on “Once Upon A Time”, all magic comes with a price.  Never met a mage of any system that didn’t think they knew how to game the system and were getting a free ride though.

Buddhist philosophy has the best explanations for avoiding magic.  It says don’t use it until you reach the level of Buddha or at least Bodhisattva.  You don’t have the wisdom to see the long term consequences of your manipulations.  You can screw up your or others’ lessons that were meant to be learned this lifetime, and create some REALLY screwed up karma for yourself.

Psionics are a little different as it’s easier to avoid affecting or manipulating others without deliberate effort.  You still have to be careful though, and others’ free agency should always be respected.
